Tutoring

What makes my tutoring sessions stand out amongst the crowd?

Face-to-face sessions

In my experience, in-person tutoring is more productive and engaging than online or remote tutoring. This is because immediate feedback is possible through the use of clearly audible conversation, gestures, eye contact, and pen-and-paper explanations. Demonstrating maths concepts, for example, is quicker, so more problems can be solved within the session time frame. The provision of resources, hands-on or otherwise, is immediate, leaving more time to focus on the concept being taught.

Preparation

I prepare thoroughly for each tutoring session before arriving at your house. I don't simply 'show up' - I always have a plan for catering for your child's specific learning needs. This might involve researching the topic your child is studying or creating a customised scaffold for writing paragraphs or texts. Perhaps I have purchased specific resources to help your child. Perhaps I have read an entire novel in order to facilitate your child's completion of a task in English. My 20-year collection of the very best teaching resources will also help fast-track your child's progress because I have the experience to know what works.

Connections to Classroom Learning

While I like to build upon your child's strengths and target areas of weakness based on my own observations, it is also vitally important to teach concepts that align with your child's current school context. Learning becomes more relevant when connections are made to the concepts being taught in the classroom. I always encourage students to reflect upon their classroom learning and share areas of concern with me so that I can prepare suitable activities to target these difficulties. Authentic learning is ultimately more effective learning.

Teaching Style

I endeavour to be friendly and approachable throughout every session no matter what my day has been like. Years of working in the area of diverse learning has given me patience in spades. If your child doesn't understand a concept, I will teach it using a variety of approaches. I have a flexible and creative teaching style, which means I will listen to your child and adjust my teaching to meet his or her immediate needs. Questioning is something I am particularly adept at. Formative assessment is built into every tutoring session.
